Didn’t find any virus and everything seems as normal as before, so what’s wrong with your PC? And how to boost PC speed & performance and get your fast running computer back? Follow the 6 must-know methods below, you may find the answer to solve this tough question.

Table of contents for 6 must-know methods to boost PC speed & performance

Method 1: Clean and optimize your registry

Method 2: Stop unnecessary start-up programs

Method 3: Clear the temporary files on your computer

Method 4: Uninstall unnecessary programs on your computer

Method 5: Backup your Windows registry

Method 6: Defrag your hard disk

Method 1:

Clean and optimize your registry

To boost PC speed & performance, firstly clean and optimize your registry rather than add RAM or buy a new computer. Your RAM may be already at the maximum that the mother board can support. Registry is the center database of your Windows OS which contains necessary information and settings for hardware, software, and per-user settings. Registry launches first whenever you start up your computer.

If Windows registry is too fat and full of errors, PC performance will be seriously impacted, and system crashes, freezes and slowdown will occur again and again. So cleaning registry is always the first and most important part to boost PC speed & performance. To clean and optimize Windows registry, there are 2 ways:

1. Clean your registry manually.

This will put your computer in high risk if you are not a registry expert. Wrong deleting or modification in registry will lead a computer crack. Click "Start", click "Run", type in "regedit" to open Windows registry, which is separated into primary sections: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, HKEY_CURRENT_USER, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, HKEY_USERS and HKEY_CURRENT CONFIG. Click the plus to find and revise registry keys and values that are designed to boost PC speed & performance.

2. Using a Registry Cleaner/Optimizer

Download Registry Cleaner/Optimizer and run a free registry scan, you will know how many errors exist in your Windows registry.

If you are not familiar with registry, it is highly recommended to use a professional program - Registry Cleaner/Optimizer. This will make it much easier and safer for you to boost PC speed & performance.

Method 2:

Stop unnecessary start-up programs

To boost PC speed & performance, one important part is to boost PC startup speed. You may not know that as you install programs, some of them add themselves into auto-start program list without your permission. And it takes time for all these auto-start programs to boot when you start up your computer. The more are the auto-start programs, the slower does your PC boot.

Click "Start", select "Run", then input "msconfig". Select "Boot" then you can disable unneeded startup programs to boost PC startup speed.

Some Registry Cleaner/Optimizer can also help you do this job more easily. Well-designed registry optimizer offers a tool named Windows Startup Manager , which displays detailed information of auto-start programs and lets you manage them easily.

Of course this can also be done by revising Windows registry. But it is with high risk that nobody will recommend this method to boost PC startup speed.

Method 3:

Clear the temporary files on your computer

The Temporary files may appear on the hard drive beginning with a tilde character (~) and ending with a .TMP extension. Tons of temporary files on your computer will take up a lot of space and thus slow down your PC, so you need to regularly clear them to boost PC speed & performance.

The browser history will not only take up your disk space but also expose your privacy. So then you need to clear your browser history. You can Click Safety menu on the upper-right of the Brower, then click Delete Browsing History. For other kind of temporary files that can not be deleted manually, such as index.dat files, you need some professional programs like a privacy protector or history cleaner. Try to find those useless history and temporary files and delete them.

Method 4:

Uninstall the unnecessary programs on PC

The forth method to boost PC speed & performance is to uninstall unused programs rather than just delete them to free up disk space. The traditional way to uninstall a program from your PC is to click on START > CONTROL PANEL > ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS, then find the program you want to remove and click "uninstall" beside it. Generally it works well but sometimes this may leave your computer stuck. Some program cannot be uninstalled by this method.

Another important thing you need to know is that necessary information of installed programs is stored in windows registry. And even you uninstall the programs, information remains there. So, in order to boost PC speed & performance completely, remember to clear these useless data from Windows registry after you uninstall a program.

Method 5:

Back up your registry

You want to do something to boost PC speed & performance, that' good. But before you do any modification in your system, it is highly recommended to back up your registry in case you made unexpected mistake. Click Start > Run and type regedit. On the File Menu, click Export. Name the file as registry backup and click save. To restore your registry backup, just double click it and press Yes. If you are using a registry cleaner/optimizer tool, it is better if the utility has automatic backup and restore function.

Method 6:

Defrag your hard disk

When your computer writes information on your computer, a section of a file can be written near the beginning of the disc, whereas the rest may be written near the end. The computer spends time in retrieving these file clusters from all over the disc so this causes programs to run slowly. A disk defrag is needed to boost PC speed & performance. You can click "Start", "Accessories", "System Tools", and select "Disk Defragmenter" to defrag your hard disk. It is better to do a disk defragment once a month.

The 6 methods provided above are the most common ways to boost PC speed & performance, but also with high risk. If the registry keys are deleted wrongly, a system reinstallation is needed. So if you plan to boost PC speed & performance, safety is the most important and using a Registry Cleaner/Optimizer is recommended.

There are many Registry Cleaner/Optimizer can work as a PC speed booster but few of them have the integrated functions including registry cleanup, registry defrag, history cleaner, system optimizer, IE manager, Stat up manager, uninstall manager and back up tools as Wondershare Registry Optimizer.
